Global Trends in Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery trends around the worldThe International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) recently revealed that 20 million cosmetic procedures were performed last year, indicating that plastic surgery is growing in global popularity. The ISAPS report also suggests that plastic surgeons are offering the latest techniques and technology, such as fat grafting, to meet the needs of their patients.

Here, the team at the Plastic Surgery Group of New Jersey breaks down the 2014 statistical report from ISAPS, the leading international body of board certified cosmetic plastic surgeons.

U.S. Tops List of Countries that Performed the Most Procedures

According to the ISAPS report, 20 percent of people that had surgical and nonsurgical procedures last year lived in the U.S. Ten percent resided in Brazil (per ISAPS, Brazilians can write off breast augmentation and rhinoplasty on their income taxes!), 6 percent in Japan and nearly 5 percent in South Korea. Mexico accounted for 3.5 percent of surgical and nonsurgical procedures.

Most Popular Surgical Procedures

Globally, the most popular surgical procedure in 2014 was eyelid surgery. Over 1.4 million procedures were performed to reverse the signs of aging, correct genetically droopy lids or create a more natural fold in the upper eyelid (which is popular in Asian countries).

Liposuction and breast augmentation were the second and third most popular surgical procedures, with fat grafting and rhinoplasty rounding out the top five.

Most Popular Non-Surgical Procedures

Treatments with botulinum toxin products (i.e., Botox, Dysport) were the most popular non-surgical procedures, followed by hyaluronic acid treatments like Juvederm and Restylane. This finding indicates that global citizens enjoy quick, in-office treatments that offer noticeable anti-aging results with no downtime. Hair removal, chemical peel and laser skin resurfacing were also leading procedures.

Women vs. Men

Women represented 86 percent of non-surgical and surgical procedure patients. More women had breast augmentation than any other procedure (1.3 million procedures performed worldwide). Liposuction, eyelid surgery, fat grafting and tummy tuck were also popular among women.

More men than ever before had cosmetic procedures in 2014 (2.5 million). They opted mostly for eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, liposuction, gynecomastia treatment and fat grafting.
