The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the world’s largest group of board-certified plastic surgeons. Each year, they survey their 7,000+ members to get an idea of the current state of plastic surgery. Here, the plastic surgeons of the Plastic Surgery Group of New Jersey (who are members of the ASPS) discuss the findings of the newly released 2015 annual report.
Tremendous Growth in Overall Interest
One of the most exciting findings in the ASPS 2015 annual report is the overall interest in plastic surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. According to their data, overall cosmetic procedures have risen 115 percent since 2000. Compared to 2014, there was a 2 percent increase. It is safe to say that more people continue to realize the life-changing benefits of plastic surgery!
Lift Procedures Surging
Historically, facelift has been an extremely popular procedure — in fact, it was in the top 5 procedures every year from 2000-2014. Recent data shows that other types of “lift” procedures are joining facelift and seeing tremendous growth in the new millennium. For example, note the following growth since 2000:
- Breast lifts up 89 percent
- Buttock lifts up 252 percent
- Lower body lifts up 3,973 percent
- Upper arm lifts up 4,954 percent
Botox and Breast Augmentation Claim Top Spots
Perhaps not entirely surprisingly, Botox and breast augmentation were the most popular non-surgical and surgical procedures, respectively, in 2015. ASPS reported 279,143 breast augmentation procedures and 6.7 million Botox procedures.
Buttock Procedures Getting Plenty of Attention
According to ASPS, on average there was a buttock procedure performed in 2015 every 30 minutes of every day! Buttock augmentation, buttock lift and buttock implants were the most popular buttock procedures of 2015. Buttock augmentation procedures were up 28 percent from 2014 to 2015, and buttock lift and buttock implant procedures were both up 36 percent.
Breast Reconstruction Awareness Spreading
ASPS launched a campaign in 2012 to help educate women with breast cancer about their reconstruction options; the data shows the campaign has been paying off. Breast reconstruction procedures increased 4 percent from 2014 to 2015, and 35 percent since 2000.
