Last year, Americans spent a record-breaking amount on plastic surgery. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, this was the first time plastic surgeons noted such high numbers — closing in on almost $14 billion. This is a $1.5 billion increase from 2014 to 2015. The team at the Plastic Surgery Group of New Jersey breaks down the news in more detail here.
Why So Many People Pursued Plastic Surgery
The reasons why people undergo plastic surgery are as varied as the individuals themselves. However, some common themes emerged, such as the following:
- to recapture their youth – many patients noted the desire to restore their once-youthful facial appearance
- to stay competitive in the workplace – a large group of men in particular mentioned the goal of keeping up with younger colleagues when up for new jobs or promotions
- to address stubborn problem areas – it was common among many plastic surgery patients to address areas of body fat that were unresponsive to diet and exercise efforts
- to address deep-seated insecurities – procedures such as labiaplasty gained popularity as more women sought to address features causing shame and embarrassment
